Dunn's River Falls Tips: Best Time to Go, What to Bring and How to Beat the Crowds
Planning to climb Dunn's River Falls? When to arrive, what to wear, how cruise days affect crowds and how to pair it with the Blue Hole.

Dunn's River Falls near Ocho Rios is Jamaica's most famous waterfall. The falls step down roughly 180 metres (about 600 feet) of natural limestone terraces into the Caribbean Sea, and you can climb them, hand-in-hand with a guide, from the beach to the top. Here's how to make the most of it.
When to go
- Go early. Arriving close to opening time is the single best way to avoid crowds.
- Check the cruise ship schedule. Ocho Rios is a cruise port, and the falls get busiest on days when ships are docked. A local driver will know which days to avoid.
- Weekdays beat weekends when local families visit too.
What to bring
- Water shoes. The rocks are slippery. You can usually rent or buy them on site, but your own pair will fit better.
- Swimwear under light clothes, and a change of clothes for afterwards.
- A waterproof phone pouch or a small waterproof camera.
- Cash in small bills for lockers, guide tips and snacks.
- Reef-safe sunscreen.
Tip: Leave valuables at your hotel. You'll be wet from start to finish.
Climbing the falls
Climbing is done in groups with an official guide, who'll show you where to step and stop for photos. It's suitable for most people with reasonable fitness, and you can leave the climb at several points if you've had enough. Expect about 60–90 minutes for the climb itself.
For current entry fees and opening hours, check the official Dunn's River Falls website before your visit.
Pair it with the Blue Hole
The Blue Hole (Island Gully Falls), in the hills above Ocho Rios, makes a perfect second stop: a series of turquoise pools with rope swings and jumping spots, usually much quieter than Dunn's River. Doing both in one day is very manageable with a private driver.
Getting there
Dunn's River is just west of Ocho Rios town. From Montego Bay hotels, expect about 1.5–2 hours each way (see our Montego Bay to Ocho Rios guide). If you're staying in Ocho Rios, it's only minutes away.
With a private excursion, we pick you up at your hotel, wait while you climb and can add stops like the Blue Hole, a jerk lunch or shopping in town.
