How to Get from Montego Bay Airport to Negril: Private Transfer vs Shuttle vs Taxi
Comparing the ways to get from MBJ airport to Negril's Seven Mile Beach: drive time, cost, comfort and which option suits your group.

Negril is one of Jamaica's most-loved beach towns, but there's no airport for international flights nearby. Almost everyone flies into Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay and drives west from there. Here's how the options compare, so you can choose the one that fits your trip.
How far is Negril from Montego Bay airport?
Negril is roughly 50 miles (80 km) west of MBJ. The drive follows the coastal highway through Hopewell, Lucea and Green Island, with the sea on your right for much of the way. Expect about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes, depending on traffic leaving Montego Bay and where your hotel is. Seven Mile Beach comes first; the West End cliffs are a few minutes further.
Option 1: Private transfer
A private transfer means a licensed driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes only your group straight to your hotel door.
Best for: families, couples, groups with luggage, anyone landing late or tired.
- Door to door. No waiting for other passengers or stopping at other hotels.
- Flight tracking. If your flight is late, your driver adjusts.
- Stops on request. Grab groceries, a cold Red Stripe or jerk chicken on the way.
- Fixed price per vehicle, so a group of four often pays about the same as two shuttle seats.
Option 2: Shared shuttle
Shared shuttles sell individual seats and fill a van with travelers heading to several Negril hotels.
Best for: solo travelers on a tight budget who don't mind waiting.
The trade-off is time. Shuttles often wait at the airport until the van is full, then make several drop-offs, which can turn a 75-minute drive into 2โ3 hours.
Option 3: Airport taxi
Licensed taxis are available at MBJ, but you'll be negotiating at the curb after a long flight, and prices for a long-distance run like Negril vary. If you go this route, agree the fare in advance and make sure the vehicle is properly licensed (see what a JUTA driver is).
Option 4: Rental car
Driving yourself is possible, but Jamaica drives on the left, roads can be narrow and winding, and you'll be navigating at night if you land late. Most visitors find a driver more relaxing for the airport run, and rent a car later if they want one.

Tips for the drive
- Have small US bills for snacks or a roadside stop.
- Ask for a stop in Lucea if you'd like to stretch your legs; it's a pretty harbour town about halfway.
- Time your arrival for sunset. If you land in the early afternoon, you can be on Seven Mile Beach in time for the sky to turn orange.
