Landing in Jamaica for the first time? Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay is the island's busiest airport for visitors, and it's straightforward once you know the order of things. Here's what to expect from the moment the wheels touch down.
1. Before you fly: get your paperwork ready
Jamaica requires every arriving passenger to complete an immigration and customs declaration. An online version is available before you travel, and filling it in ahead of time can save a few minutes in the hall. Rules change, so check the current requirements with your airline or the Jamaican government's official sites before you fly.
Have these handy in your carry-on:
- Passport (valid for your whole stay)
- Your hotel or villa address
- Your return flight details
- Your transfer confirmation and driver's WhatsApp number
2. Immigration
After leaving the plane, follow signs to Immigration. Lines are longest when several international flights land together, typically around midday and early afternoon, so be patient. The officer may ask where you're staying and how long you'll be in Jamaica.
Tip: If you're traveling with children or someone with limited mobility, ask a staff member about priority lines.
3. Baggage claim and customs
Collect your bags from the carousel, then pass through Customs. Most visitors simply hand over their declaration and walk through.
4. The arrivals hall: finding your driver
After customs you'll walk into the arrivals area, where many tour reps and transport companies wait. This is where a pre-booked transfer pays off:
- Look for your name. Our drivers hold a Gabrielle Tours sign with your name on it.
- Message us if you can't see your driver right away. We'll have been tracking your flight.
- Politely decline unsolicited offers of rides or help with bags if you already have a booking.
5. Get on the road
Your driver will help load luggage into an air-conditioned vehicle, and you're off. Typical drive times from MBJ:
| Destination | Approx. drive |
|---|---|
| Rose Hall & Montego Bay hotels | 15โ30 min |
| Falmouth (RIU resorts) | 35โ45 min |
| Negril | 1 hr 15 min โ 1 hr 30 min |
| Runaway Bay | about 1 hr 15 min |
| Ocho Rios | 1 hr 30 min โ 1 hr 45 min |
| South Coast (Whitehouse) | about 1 hr 30 min |
Departing MBJ
On the way home, plan to arrive at the airport about 3 hours before an international flight, especially in peak season. If you booked an arrival with us, ask about a return pickup and we'll time it around your flight and your hotel's distance from the airport.
